10 songs for 2023

For four years now, I’ve made a playlist of my top songs every month. The idea was to create a musical diary of sorts. When I listen to December 2019, some of the thoughts I was having at the time come rushing back. As my December 2023 playlist comes to an end, I want to start a new tradition of reflecting on the 10 songs that defined my year, roughly in chronological order.

  1. “Eat That Up, It’s Good for You” by Two Door Cinema Club

2010 on repeat in 2023.

  1. “Head on Fire” by Griff & Sigrid

I had this on repeat on the train during my trip to Japan in April.

  1. “Something for your M.I.N.D.” by Superorganism

I heard about this band through a coworker. The song is kinda awesome.

  1. “LAS BABYS” by Aitana

It was a fun summer song.

  1. “Let’s Sort the Whole Thing Out” by Carly Rae Jepsen

I went to the Anything to Be With You tour in August at Pier 17 in NYC, conveniently a 5 minute walk from my office. This song is so much fun live.

  1. “Praise You” by Fatboy Slim

I’m half sure this song was played at a company all hands meeting, and it wouldn’t be the first song from work to make my listening rotation, not so much embarassing for me honestly. I think they just pick great music.

  1. “我相信” by “楊培安”

I didn’t have as many Chinese songs in my Spotify Wrapped playlist this year (sad). The ones I did mainly came from friends. I heard this one on a weekend trip to the Poconos with friends.

  1. “Modern Girl” by Bleachers

My #1 song of the year! This song should’ve topped every US hits chart.

  1. “That’s Where I Am” by Maggie Rogers

Made my top songs in 2022. Back again for 2023.

  1. “You’re a God” by Vertical Horizon

I’m wrapping the year up with this old classic on repeat.
